LONG BEFORE

As her world closed in around her

and the night began to dim

she'd never seen it coming

and the least of all from him

While the life she had was ending

and the dark was closing in

her whole future felt the ripples

of his unforgiven sins

she didn't feel it coming

though she really should have seen

how his heart had lost it's rhythm

and his eyes had lost their gleam

His soul and heart were damaged

and like a broken bone un-set

he stitched together broken

self forgiveness lacking yet

Facing truth is always messy

and as breaks and fractures met

misaligned and thus unhealthy

stronger now but not correct

for a twisted heart can't feel right

and a tortured mind can't heal

and the end of all the trauma

didn't end the turning wheels

In his mind he's always fighting

a battle he can't win

and his heart is fairly aching

for this struggle's final end

and she never saw it coming

didn't see him for his lies

told to spare the both of them

from the demons in his eyes

Her heart may remain broken

and his heart an open sore

but the damage to each other

should have ended long before
